Currently there is a wide variety of tools and solutions available to produce content on the internet. These include out-of-the-box solutions that require zero coding or technical expertise and span all the way to fully custom coded dynamic solutions. Many of the top competitors in this space have found a happy medium that allows new users a friendly and easy to navigate environment while enabling power users to push the limits of what is possible.


Two of the industry’s current giants happen to be solutions we often employ at Token: WordPress and Hubspot CMS. Each of these services have captured the middle ground between ease of use and technical potential well enough to hold top spots in the industry. However, no service exists without its flaws – and often this is more of a deciding factor than the positives.


This is my own personal commentary and direct experiences as a web developer of 5 years as I have come to know each product through use on internal and client facing projects. Some users will likely have a different or even opposite opinion and that is natural. In the end the tool you choose to do your job should be chosen based on whatever criteria matter most to you as an individual or as an organization.


WordPress is by far the most used and most supported CMS available with over 60 million websites running on the platform. This includes ~30% of the top 10k most visited websites on the internet. WordPress is primarily a CMS used to publish blog content, but has grown into a robust platform for all things web.


Hubspot features incredibly strong integration with the rest of its platform and allows for a seamless experience when combining web development with marketing, analytics, and SEO. Hubspot is primarily a marketing tool.

Pros & Cons:

WordPress Pros:

  • Extremely extensible through plugins
  • High level of control
  • Excellent page building and potential for customization
  • Tons of SEO potential
  • Smooth and straightforward UI/Workflow

WordPress Cons:

  • Less integration with other marketing systems
  • While most features are possible, some take extra work (is. SEO)
  • Requires updating and support to run at 100% efficiency
  • Customization can require coding

Hubspot Pros:

  • Amazing integration of technical systems
  • Data and analytics are easily accessible
  • Responsive and knowledgeable support
  • Very high performance – not a lot of fluff or extra unwanted weight
  • Great  out-of-the-box solutions

Hubspot Cons:

  • Hasn’t been around as long and has a smaller community of users
  • Customization and updating is clunky and requires extensive work
  • Complicated workflows
  • Restrictive if you don’t want to use out-of-the-box solutions
  • Almost certainly need an in house developer to maintain or update a website in any meaningful way
  • Uses proprietary programming language making developers harder to find/more expensive

Overall Token chooses to use WordPress for many reasons but our biggest factors are having full control over customization to complement our in house design team and ease of use for client enablement after our projects are delivered.
